Watch native American use of tusk shells Class Scaphopoda M-620 TUSK SHELL, Dentalium pilsbryi, a primitive form of mollusk distantly related to the bivalves. Its tapered shell is shaped like an elephant's tusk. It burrows rapidly through the sand, pulling itself down with its hatchet-shaped foot. Scaphopods feed with modified tentacles known as captacula.
